June 2005 Highlights

National Men’s Health Week – June 13-19 2005
National Men’s Health Week is a weeklong annual observance that symbolically ends on Father’s Day. Throughout the week, health care providers, policymakers, and members of the media work together to educate the public about the detection, treatment, and prevention of health problems that affect boys and men. This weeklong event also provides an opportunity to encourage boys and men to get regular medical checkups and to seek early treatment for illness and injury.

National Safety Month – June 2005
National Safety Month is an annual observance that promotes safety in homes, in the workplace, in communities, and on the roads. The sponsor of National Safety Month is the National Safety Council (NSC), a nonprofit, nongovernmental, international public service organization dedicated to protecting life and to promoting health.

CMHS Program Spotlight – State Planning/Mental Health Block Grants
The CMHS Mental Health Block Grant program supports comprehensive, community-based systems of care for adults with serious mental illnesses and children with serious emotional disturbances. The program was established in 1981 as a model of the New Federalism approach that sent program authority back to individual States. Since its creation, the program has become the cornerstone of Federal efforts to work in partnership with States to plan and deliver state-of-the-art systems of community-based mental services for adults and children. The Mental Health Block Grant program is the single largest Federal contribution toward improving mental health service systems across the country.
