May 2006 Highlights

National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day May 8, 2006
This observance is being launched by SAMHSA to coincide with Mental Health Month in May. The theme for this inaugural celebration is “Thriving in the Community.” The event provides an opportunity for SAMHSA and SAMHSA-funded organizations to promote resilience, recovery, and the transformation of mental health services delivery for children and youth with serious mental health needs and their families.

Schizophrenia Awareness Week May 21-27, 2006
Schizophrenia Awareness Week (SAW) is an annual observance designed to educate the public about schizophrenia and how it impacts the daily lives of individuals with schizophrenia and their families. The observance focuses on eliminating the fear and ignorance that often surrounds schizophrenia and related disorders.

Mental Health Month
Mental Health Month is an annual observance sponsored by the National Mental Health Association (NMHA) and the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare (NCCBH). This year's theme, “MIND Your Health,” is intended to focus awareness on the connection between the mind and body.

Older Americans Month
Older Americans Month is an annual observance created to pay tribute to the contributions that older Americans make to the Nation. This observance is sponsored by the U.S. Administration on Aging, the Federal government agency that provides home- and community-based care and support for older adults and their caregivers.

CMHS Program Spotlight – State Planning/Mental Health Block Grants
This CMHS program supports comprehensive, community-based systems of care for adults with serious mental illnesses and children with serious emotional disturbances. Since its creation in 1981, the program has evolved as the cornerstone of Federal efforts to work in partnership with States to plan and deliver state-of-the-art systems of community-based mental services for adults and children.
